Cooler Master MH703 Earbud Review

Conclusion

It would be easy to be dismissive of the Cooler Master MH703 if you’re the type of person who just sits at their computer and never goes out, or doesn’t play games online at all. “When compared to the beefy soundscapes of a full headset it obviously wouldn’t compare and looks cheap” is what those who don’t pay attention might think to themselves. But you’d be wrong.

Let’s take a quick run through what you can plug these into. A Nintendo Switch. PS4. XBOX One. PC. Tablet. Phone (obviously most phones, but not the ‘ha no 3.5mm jack for you’ ones. And any MP3 player of your choice. Additionally the inclusion of a microphone makes them the perfect companion when gaming on the go. Anyone who’s used a regular pair of headphones knows the panic when someone calls mid-game and your weapon of choice doesn’t include a microphone. Not so here.

They are extremely comfortable thanks to a combination of lightness, even by ear-bud standards, and having enough choices of ear tips to suit any ears. It might be a small thing but we’re really big fans of the cable too. By braiding it, yet using a tight weave and fairly rigid cloth they don’t remotely get as tangled as earbuds usually get, and that’s even if you choose not to utilise the included carry case. Sure they’re not totally tangle free, but many earbuds we’ve used throughout the years tangle up into an unusable knot if you so much as think about putting them in a pocket. Not so here. The choice to have an angled jack makes them easier to slip into your pocket whilst still attached, and also keeps the cable routed slightly away from you. Furthermore by having an angled jack there is a huge reduction in the leverage that can be applied to your input jack, helping extend its lifespan and reduce the possibility of pulling it free from the circuit board with endless wiggling. We can’t be the only people who’ve had connectors which quickly degrade until it only works at a certain angle, on a Thursday, if there is a quarter moon. This setup negates a lot of that.

So they look good, are comfortable, and have a lot of cool little touches that improve their user-friendliness. How do they sound though? We think the 10mm drivers put out a great sound. The profile is fairly neutral with a slight tendency towards a scooped midrange, but nothing that dominates proceedings. Many earbuds are aware that they are small and thus the bass won’t be head-pounding, so the designers over-emphasise the bass frequencies at the expense of all others. Not here. Cooler Master have provided us with a pair of earbuds which are profiled to cope with the huge array of uses that they will find themselves in. Explosions and gunfire have a satisfying whomp, as does the low end of your music, but not so much that it dominates nor gets woolly and indistinct. No matter what you push through the MH703, from music to gameplay to your favourite ‘reaction’ Youtuber’s screams, it handles them with aplomb. Lastly the microphone sounds clear and does a good job in separating your voice from any chaos going on around you, whilst the remote is responsive and doesn’t suffer from the common fault that a triple click just pauses and skips forward, rather than going back as it’s meant to.

The Cooler Master MH703 are well designed, comfortable, fairly tangle free by regular earbud standards and are supplied with a carry case large enough to keep all of the addon elements readily to hand. With good sound quality across a huge range of genres they win our OC3D Gamers Choice Award.
