ASUS Prime X870-P WiFi Preview
Introduction and Technical Specifications
Introduction
Regular visitors to these hallowed halls will be aware we often enjoyed the company of the ASUS Prime. Why? Well it’s all fairly easy really.
Firstly, the ASUS Prime always came in white. You don’t need to have been here for a moment to know the boss loves his white hardware. Secondly, it was always affordable. We all love a high end motherboard, a Crosshair for example, but the price is for the enthusiast. The ASUS Prime motherboards were always, by contrast, affordable. Everything about the new chipset you needed, nothing you didn’t. A great stepping stone into a new hardware generation. Lastly, this mid-spec ethos meant that it was robust, and the perfect place to begin our testing of new hardware.
With the new AMD AM5 motherboards around, there are two main chipsets. The X870E makes up the bulk of the jaw-dropping models, whilst the regular X870 is for the ones that might not leave your bank manager so red-faced. The Prime falls into the latter category. One thing we do need to flag up immediately, is that the Prime’s of old used to be white. The last AMD Prime motherboard we reviewed instead was black with a lot of silver. Just casting your eye over most of the models shows that these days that’s the way things are. It’s all rather disappointing. Be one thing or the other. This solution wins over nobody.
Anyway, that’s purely an aesthetic consideration, let’s look at what it offers.
Technical Specifications
On the left is todays model, the X870-P WiFi, whilst the right hand side is just the regular Prime X870-P. Oddly, whilst the regular model is missing WiFi as the name might indicate, there is also one fewer PCIe slots. Curious.
