With this amount of cores available the need to overclock is lessened when compared relative to the boost we used to see on Core2Duo’s and the like. However, we all love free performance and we all love going even faster, so it bodes well that the X299 and new X range of CPUs have some good overclocking performance in the extreme, carefully selected, scenario highlighted by the first slide.

Although many of these elements might seem like benefits that most of us wont be taking advantage of, the explosion in the Indie gaming market, the official mod support available from Steam Workshop, and the affordability of home content creation packages has meant that a growing number of us find ourselves utilising applications that will see a boost thanks to the faster architecture of the i7-7820X.

For most of us the important part of these slides is how quickly the chip overclocks of its own devices, and with the enhanced Turbo Boost technology it is now capable of overclocking two cores at once. Whilst some applications take advantage of every core you have – Photoshop, GIMP, Sony Vegas etc – most applications are single or dual threaded, so having a couple of quick cores should see some decent improvements in daily productivity without necessitating a dive into the BIOS to tweak everything to obtain similar results.
