Up Close

We smiled when we saw the box. So often if a manufacturer is going for a logo for their product it’s knights or racing cars or even a F-117A. To have a simple torpedo is bold.

As well as the usual collection of manuals and SATA cables, MSI supply the Torpedo Max with some custom stickers for you to make the newest X570S even more your own. Naturally you can leave them off if you choose, or perhaps even design some of your own if you’d prefer to go with the RAF Roundel instead of the USAF style stars.

Here is the MSI MAG X570S Torpedo Max in the flesh, and as you can see MSI have kicked it old school by using a little bit of colour on the heatsinks as well as giving us blue DIMM slots. It’s been so long since we’ve seen any colour at all on a motherboard that we got a little misty eyed. We like it a lot. It might be a surprise to anyone recently arrived at the hobby, but we were here back in the days when none of your plastics were black, so it reminds us of the golden years.

The IO/Heatsink section on the left can be blank if you wish, or you can use the supplied stickers to customise it. Given how the colouring of the Torpedo Max is perfect for either Naval or Airforce style aesthetics you have plenty of choice.

Lastly, before we delve into the Torpedo Max in more detail, the bottom half shows off the Lighting Gen4 heatspreader as well as the naked M.2 slot at the bottom. Another of the big changes in this X570S revision is the move from an actively cooled chipset to a more regular passively cooled one.
