MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk Max Preview

Wrap Up and Video

Most of the motherboards we’ve got on hand for the new Intel Next-Gen CPU launch are the premium options available from their relevant manufacturer. That means it’s nice to see an MSI motherboard aimed at the bigger segment of the market who might be upgrading wholesale. Times are hard for all of us, and putting out thousand pound motherboards doesn’t seem realistic.

The MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk Max, on the other hand, doesn’t cut down any of the features you actually need. Yes it might not have a full cover heatspreader down the bottom half. Perhaps the lurid green colour scheme isn’t for everyone. It doesn’t have any onboard glitzy lighting. But it does have 4 M.2 slots, including one PCIe 5.0. There are 8 SATA ports for those of us with big data collections on older drives. 1 20G Type-C USB sits alongside 6 10G ones (2 Type-C, 4 Type-A) and six USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports for all your connectivity needs. With Bluetooth 5.4, WiFi 7 and a 2.5G LAN port you’re not short on networking or wireless options either. Lastly the power stage, at 90A, is hardly gutless either.

Everywhere you look it’s clear that the MSI Z790 Tomahawk Max might not be part of their high-end MEG range, but just because it’s in the MAG segment doesn’t mean MSI haven’t given it the same attention to detail.

Come back for our full review later this month, and in the meantime discuss the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk Max in our OC3D Forums.
