Clock Speeds

Normally this is the point in the review when we bring you the overclocking results. Admittedly this has been less of a major step change in recent years as manufacturers have utilised driver based overclocking to the point that there is very little extra to be squeezed out whilst retaining the cooling of the card – i.e not going liquid or sub zero. One of the major new features with the Radeon VII is their refined temperature probe system that allows the card to know how warm it is to a much more precise level than before, and thus boost it’s own clock to the very limits of the power and thermal capabilities.

We did contact AMD about the lack of overclocking just to make sure and we have been told this is a ‘known issue’ and that it will be fixed. We cant help but feel that with something like this that they should have delayed the launch, either that or they know that there really isnt any headroom and want to get the major wave of reviews out of the way and hope no one rally says too much about it.

Does it work? Unquestionably. So much so we couldn’t extract any more than it could do when it was left to its own devices. A close look at the figures below show that the average clock speed hits 1744 MHz with a peak boost of 1801 MHz. Both are impressive figures. How does it perform though?
