Gigabyte RTX 2070 Gaming OC White Review

Conclusion

The Gigabyte RTX 2070 Gaming OC White edition is a bit of a surprise package.

Whenever a special edition is launched of a card, one that requires the manufacturer to step away from their usual production line and go into a different setup, two things are almost guaranteed. Firstly, that because it’s in a different colour to the norm there is a going to be a heavy price premium to pay. You want to be special, you’ll have to open your wallet. Secondly, that because you’ve only got one choice if you’re determined to stick with your personal colour preference then the performance wont be all that because it doesn’t need to be. After all, what else are you going to use?

The Gigabyte negates both of those preconceptions and industry practises in one fell swoop.

Firstly we have to talk about the performance. As an OC version of their RTX 2070 card the White Edition already has a pretty decent factory overclock out of the box, and as we saw throughout testing it was in the midst of the RTX 2070 pack in our graphs. However, the cooler and build quality is robust enough that there is loads of headroom for you to expand the performance still further and it overclocks like a nutter. In average boost clock – an important measure of the cards stability and the ability of the cooler to dissipate heat – it was in second place of all the RTX 2070s that we’ve reviewed. Furthermore it isn’t just a case of big number, average performance. No sir. The performance results back up that big clock speed with the White Edition regularly finding itself either at the top, or damn close to the top of the RTX 2070s. Just because this is your only white option doesn’t mean that Gigabyte have sold you short.

Cooling is also very good. Whether the reverse direction of the middle fan makes any difference is always hard to quantify as we haven’t got the same card but with a regular fan configuration to compare with. What we have got though is experience of the other RTX 2070 coolers on the market and the Gigabyte is both cool and quiet. We don’t know about you but cool and quiet are the only two things we really care about when it comes to the heatsink and fan combinations on our graphics cards, so box ticked.

Lastly nearly every special edition piece of hardware, or at least hardware in a non-standard colour, comes with a beefy price tag, but the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Gaming OC White is just £530. Or, to put it another way, the same price as their black OC edition card. It’s only 30 quid more than most basic RTX 2070s, so having a card which is in a unique colour and has hefty performance but doesn’t break the bank is something that totally deserves lots of kudos being sent in Gigabyte’s direction.

The Gigabyte RTX 2070 Gaming OC White is fast, quiet, looks good and has plenty of overclocking headroom and all for a very reasonable price. Excellent.
