MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 Review
Conclusion
Conclusion
With a 500Hz panel the MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 is clearly a gaming focussed monitor. In fact it’s probably fair to say it’s aimed at a certain crowd more than gamers as a whole. After all, no GPU on Earth will give you 500 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077. If you’re not maximising the refresh rate of the X50 then it’s wasted potential.
By using a 1440P resolution rather than 4K you’ve already got a better chance of hitting that height as you would with a 4K panel. That isn’t to say that you’re losing image quality. Far from it. Like every OLED display the MSI 272QP is gorgeous to look at it. Special praise has to go to the excellent anti-reflection coating. Often such coatings can turn blacks grey, but not here. Colours pop, text is crisp, it’s everything you hope to get when you click add to cart.
Clearly though, that’s not unique to an OLED. We’ve gone through plenty of MSI options and all have lush screens to look at. No, the USP of the X50 is that 500Hz refresh rate. Perfect for competitive games. With a suitably undemanding title – hello Minecraft/Fortnite et al – and a beefy enough GPU you can easily pump 500 FPS. You’ll definitely be able to put your crosshair on your enemy infinitely more accurately than they will. Even MSI’s blurb emphasises how this is a panel for eSports tournament play, and we don’t disagree. No SP content benefits from such ludicrous refresh rates, and anything prettier to look at won’t be able to hit that high target frames per second.
Obviously whilst we are aware this is primarily a gaming monitor, it’s worth being aware of the elements that help limit burn-in potential. The one you’ll come across most often is the Pixel Refresh. After four hours of use the panel refreshes, helping reduce the chance of an OLED sticking. This time has also been expanded to 24 hours from the 16 of its predecessors. Perfect if you’ve got a concrete bladder. Static images are handled with automatic logo, taskbar and boundary detection. All the bits that might be on the screen for a while are detected and dimmed. Couple these to the three year warranty and you can go OLED without fear.
If you are in the target audience for the very specific abilities of the 272QP X50 then there is little else that gets close, and it easily wins our OC3D Gamers Choice Award. To be honest you’d have to need all those frames to justify the £898.99 price, £250 more than the same panel capped to 280Hz.
