Nvidia RTX 4070 Super FE Review

Conclusion

If you’re a regular reader of OC3D you’ll be aware that we weren’t overly impressed by Nvidia’s renaming of their product range when the 4000 series cards first appeared. Launching the Ti cards alongside their vanilla cousins, and having so many models in the Ada Lovelace lineup, meant a squashed market.

Where does it fit?

With the launch today of the RTX 4070 Super, things haven’t exactly got easier. Back in the day we used to joke at products which had been so carefully squeezed into a slot in the market it was almost offensive. As if the manufacturers have no respect for their users. The RTX 4070 Super FE is the perfect encapsulation of that. Back on page one we showed you how it compares to the extant models. It’s so perfectly inbetween the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti. Both of those cards are perfect as is. The 4070 for those who want great 1440P performance at an affordable tag. The Ti for those who want a little more but can’t stretch to the RTX 4080.

Here, the RTX 4070 Super FE is exactly where you would expect it to perform. It holds no surprises. No shocks. Just look at the specs, guess how it would perform compared to the other RTX 4070 cards and you’ll be spot on. Where it does score is one of pricing. If you haven’t hopped on board the 4000 series train, the introduction of the Super means the RTX 4070 has seen a price drop. Great stuff for consumers. Similarly if you were saving up for a 4070 but haven’t yet brought one, then you can get the Super for the same money and gain a small amount of FPS.

Final Thoughts

However, the fact remains that the RTX 4070 is still a brilliant card. It’s still a fabulous gaming card in all but the most demanding 4K games. If you’re on anything from the 3000 range or earlier, or all but the flagship Radeon card, this will spank any game you offer up to it. Additionally the CUDA and Tensor cores leverage massive rendering potential in either 3D, video encoding or even AI generation tasks. It might leave a nasty taste in our mouth, but it’s still incredibly nourishing.

Yes, if budgets are tight you should use the introduction of the Super and subsequent price drop of the vanilla card to get one of them. If you want performance the soon-to-be ended Ti card is still the best bet before you reach the RTX 4080. But the RTX 4070 Super FE is on the shelves, and reasonably priced with great performance, thus winning our OC3D Gamers Choice Award.

Update post launch : Since writing this the word has leaked online about the upcoming RTX 4070 Ti Super and its alleged pricing being around the £799 mark. Otherwise known as the price point for the current regular Ti card. With the vanilla RTX 4070 not being price cut to the levels we hoped, or it needed, this card is a great buy. We don’t think that, at this price, it’ll be around for long. We’ve also seen how much the vendor cards are priced at. In short, if you really want this card at this price point, don’t hang around. We do wish Nvidia had really slashed the price of the regular RTX 4070, or eliminated it entirely. Their whole range is far too muddled right now. Some clarity for the consumer would go far to healing the wounds of the initial, confused, RTX 4000 series launch.
