Up Close

Against the silvery-grey MM350 mouse mat the canary yellow box pops even more than it does when just sat on a shelf. It is everything you want packaging to be. Instantly recognisable, clear product shots, clear feature list with little in the way of marketing speak. Lovely.

In wired mode the Harpoon looks so much like Corsair’s normal Harpoon that you could be forgiven for thinking there is nothing special about it at all. It doesn’t give away that it’s wireless to the casual observer, and if you pick it up there isn’t the weight you’d expect from a mouse that has a battery inside it. In fact it’s about as light a mouse as we’ve ever tested. We’re pretty sure you could move the pointer with just some heavy breathing.

The design effort is clear to see from the underside. The cable isn’t some wobbly, barely connected setup like many ‘play and charge’ designs, but instead the connector is robust and slips into two channels either side of the scroll wheel guaranteeing a tight fit and the ability to game hard without compromise. It does come out easily enough for those times when you want to run wirelessly, and the trapdoor storage area for the wireless receiver lets you carry it to wherever you might be playing without needing to root about in the depths of your rucksack for the connector. If you run wired it never gives away that it’s wireless, whereas when wireless it’s such low latency and so quick to setup that you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re still wired.

Although there isn’t much curve to the design of the Harpoon it still isn’t ambidextrous in the strictest sense as only the left hand side of the mouse has any buttons on it. If, however, you’ve got used to using right hand mice in your left hand then it’s a neutral enough shape that you shouldn’t have any issues.
