Conclusion

Such has been the success of the M65 design that this isn’t the first time we’ve had one pass through our testing. It was ‘right’ upon first release and thus all subsequent versions have just brought the hardware up to date whilst keeping the main design the same as that with which we are all familiar.

The M65 RGB Elite carries on this good work.

The primary change is naturally the sensor that underpins the M65 Elite. The Pro ran a 12000 DPI sensor but in the continuing arms race of ever higher DPIs, so it isn’t a shock to see the Elite has had a change to the PixArt PMW3391. This now runs all the way up to a barely believable 18000 DPI. Obviously this is way too far for average desktop use, but in games that allow you to turn down the sensitivity this extra fine DPI level lets you be more accurate than ever before without compromising the twitchiness that lets you rise to the top of the high score tables.

Elsewhere the dimensions, whilst still broadly the same as before, have seen a slight tweak with the M65 Elite a hair wider than its predecessors and, most beneficially, and 15% lighter. You still have the three weights underneath if you want to keep it having a certain heft to it, but if you like your mouse to be easier to manipulate then this weight reduction will be a welcome one.

Beyond those changes everything else about the M65 RGB Elite is the same as it ever was, namely it’s comfortable for extended stretches and suitable for both palm and claw styles, although the positioning of the sniper button makes the palm style a tiny bit more ergonomic. Speaking of the sniper button it’s as useful as it ever has been, and given the enormous DPI levels possible on this refined M65 perhaps even more than before. Naturally you can customise it to be anything you like, and the iCUE software remains one of the best around at this, letting you do everything from setting it up as a single key to running complicated timing based macros. You will get out of it what you put in, which is true of a lot of serious hardware. The lighting is outstanding with strong beams from the front and rear and good reflection of your colour choice, although heavily saturated colours work better than pastel ones.

All in all the M65 RGB Elite is a great update to an already great mouse, bringing a better sensor that combines accuracy with responsiveness to take your gaming to new heights, and thus wins our OC3D Gamers Choice Award.
