Up Close

The MSI Gaming packaging is about as bold and simple as it’s possible to be whilst still giving you all the information you require. There is a clear product shot – although the front flap opens for those who are particularly curious – and clear model name, whilst on the reverse all the key features are easily labelled. It’s everything a box design should be.

As with any mouse they are simple to work out what is what but it never hurts to have a handy quickstart guide and the MSI GM30 one fits the bill perfectly. The mouse itself is dark grey with a finish which looks like a well-worn stone you’ve found on the beach. It’s smooth, but there is no lack of grip as we’ll see on the side panels.

Focussing solely upon the top you can see how narrow the frontal area of the GM30 is, with the main buttons tapering as you get towards the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel itself is heavily textured and also lights up. There are further lighting panels just behind it around the DPI cycling button, with the MSI Dragon logo at the rear also supporting RGB lighting.

The underside shows off the central location for the optical sensor as well as the large low-friction pads that help the Clutch GM30 glide across your gaming surface of choice.

The left hand side combines the back/forward buttons which are now so ubiquitous that we downgrade mice which aren’t equipped with them. Beneath that is a soft, textured, rubber panel to help keep the GM30 under your control even if you’re using it outside in a monsoon.

The right hand side just has the textured rubber on it. You can tell how incredibly soft and grippy it is from the fact it has a fingerprint on it already and all we did was take it from the box to the photography area and set it down.

Lastly the cable is a non-braided model, something which has seen a growth in recent times. Although the big MSI label might not meet the approval of those who want their IO cabling to be as sleek as possible, it definitely makes it easier to find the Clutch GM30 in a hurry if you want to take it with you to a gaming show.
