Conclusion

With a street price around the £300 mark nobody is going to confuse the G.Skill Trident Z Royal Elite kit with some no-brand/no-performance memory kit. As if the Royal Elite name didn’t clue you in, this isn’t a product designed for the average user who doesn’t really care about extracting every ounce of performance from their rig. This is for people who already have a barn-storming setup, but want that little extra something to help tip it over the edge into the sunlit uplands of high performance.

If that is you, oh boy have G.Skill got a kit for you.

As you could see from our testing it doesn’t matter if you start with a very good kit in its own right and how you overclock it, having a memory kit which can hit those speeds and timings out of the box will always bring you better performance. In fact G.Skill deserve special praise for managing to find RAM chips capable of low timings and fast speeds. The holy grail of memory. Like Moriarty’s threat to Holmes, many kits can promise you the one, but not the other. 4000 MHz @ CAS14 is insanely good, and our results bear this out. Although not free performance per se, improving by 4 FPS @ 4K or 9 FPS @ 1440 in Shadow of the Tomb Raider when compared to our heavily overclocked comparison kit is the level of gaming frames per second boost that many people spend a fortune attempting to obtain. Similarly, as anyone who renders a lot will know, anything that shaves even a second off your render times has a price beyond measure and the Trident Z Royal Elite is 5 seconds faster for a 4K scene.

We know the kits aesthetics might not be to everyones taste as it’s quite high on the glitz factor. However, once installed that heatsink design isn’t as obvious as it is here in our images. Additionally the crystal lighting design produces high saturated colours and the way it’s shaped diffuse the colours enough that it constantly catches the attention.

You need the underlying high quality hardware to really get the big gains, but if you’ve hit the performance wall and wonder what more you can do to your system to get those last few FPS or perhaps lower your render times by those final few seconds then the G.Skill Trident Z Royal Elite show that having a memory kit which is supremely fast out of the box will do more than you might imagine to speed up your rig. It’s not cheap, but high performance never is.
