Conclusion

Wrapping up our thoughts on the G.Skill Trident Z Royal Series is nice and simple as there is so little to talk about because it’s so clearly lush.

Firstly we have to mention that it comes in two distinct flavours, the silver/chrome that we have here today, and the gold type that was in the image on our front page. Gold has always, to us at least, looked a little tacky. It’s a bit try-hard. Like those gold-wrapped Bugatti Veyron’s you see parked outside Harrods. It’s quite a committal colour, wherein you’d need everything else in your system to be gold plated. However, just because we aren’t overly keen on it doesn’t mean that you’re not allowed to be. After all, for every person who thinks the Liberty Walk cars are abominations there are others queued up to have their arches ballooned.

In the silver version though there are no such personal taste matters to be taken into consideration. As the prevalence of RGB lighting has meant that 99% of all modern hardware comes in monochrome, so the simple mirror finish blends in perfectly with the rest of your components whether your system is on or off. When it’s on though that mirror helps reflect all your carefully chosen RGB effects around the top side of your motherboard and looks the absolute business.

Additionally the lighting on board each stick is really spectacular. By utilising a crystal effect plastic cover the light gets broken up across the length of the Royal DIMM. It’s the type of effect that is far better seen in the flesh than described, but as you’re not all in our offices then the image at the top of this page and those on the previous page shows how well this works. The closest thing that we can describe it as is, if you’re as old as us, the dithering method old computers used to use to trick the eye into thinking there are more colours on screen than the computer is actually capable of displaying. This means that if you want to have a single hue it looks brilliant, but if you expand into rainbows then it’s truly jaw-dropping.

Usually products with this many design touches are right at the top of a manufacturers range and with a price-tag to match. Exclusivity is an important element of marketing apparently. G.Skill deserve lots of plaudits for spreading the Royal Series design across a broad spectrum of capacities and speed, ensuring that no matter your budget – within reasonable limits of course – you’ll be able to purchase a Trident Z Royal Series to fit your pocket. The aesthetics are spectacular enough that we think an awful lot of you will be wishing to do so, and it is one of the easiest winners of our OC3D Aesthetic awards that we’ve had. Glorious.
