Lian Li Edge Gold 1200W Gold Power Supply Review
Meet the Lian Li Edge Gold 1200W (EG1200G)
Lian Li are changing the PSU market with their new Edge Gold series units
Let’s face it: the PSU market can often be boring. PSU generations aren’t as transformative as CPU and GPU generations. Furthermore, it doesn’t help that most power supplies look nearly identical. Thankfully, there are times when someone does something a little crazy, and that’s what we have here today with the Lian Li Edge Gold series.
What we have here today is a power supply that is far from normal. Lian Li is doing something different, and that is a great thing. With their “Edge” series design, this new PSU series is perfect for dual-chambered PC case designs and is much more convenient than traditional ones. While the “Edge” form factor may not be for everyone, it is incredibly useful when paired with a suitable PC case.
Meet the Lian Li Edge Gold 1200W (EG1200G)
Alongside their “Edge” form factor, Lian Li’s new Edge Gold PSUs now have a detachable hub that can be used to further simplify PC cable management. This hub is a USB hub and a fan hub. It can connect to up to six fans and four USB devices.
The Lian Li EG1200G is Cybenetics Gold rated and has a Cybenetics A-class noise rating. The latter of these ratings allows users to be sure that this PSU will be fairly quiet under heavy loads. During our testing, we never noticed any PSU noise from this PSU.
Below you can see the EG1200G’s innovative L-shape. While this shape wouldn’t be useful in standard ATX “tower” PC cases, it makes a lot of sense in dual-chambered PC case designs. In these case designs, the modular PSU cable connection points are easy to access, making cable management and replacement a simple process.
Lian Li’s Edge series makes PC building a little bit simpler, and we love that. Yes, the standard ATX form factor works, but why shouldn’t PC building be simpler? If you use a “back-connect” motherboard and a suitable PC case, Lian Li’s Edge series might be perfect for your PC build. Could cable management get any simpler than that?
Detachable Hub
One of the key features of Lian Li’s newest Edge series units is their included “Edge hub”, which adds more cable management options to their new Edge series power supplies. This hub can be connected directly to a compatible Edge series PSU, or be mounted magnetically to a PC case at a different location.
Power for this hub can come from a Lian Li Edge series PSU through a specialised connector or using an 8-pin PCIe power connector. This hub can power up to six fans and four USB devices.
Below is the Edge hub power connector on Lian Li’s EG1200S power supply.
Attach the hub to your case or PSU
Below, you can see what Lian Li’s Edge Hub looks like when connected to an EG1200S power supply. Remember the hub can be placed anywhere on a steel PC case thanks to the hub’s built-in magnet. This gives users of this hub more cable management options.
Removable fan filter/protector
Another thing to note about the Lian Li Edge EG1200G is that the cover/filter for its fan is removable. This makes cleaning this filter easy and allows users to re-orient the PSU ‘s Lian Li logo if its stock configuration isn’t suitable for your system.
Cable Combs
Below is the bag that contains Lian Li’s modular PSU cables and a smaller bag that includes cable combs for this PSU’s pre-braided PSU cables.
Lian Li’s cables for their Edge series PSUs already include cable combs. However, these extra cable combs can further improve the look of this PSU’s cables inside your system. users can place these cable combs wherever they like. This allows users to create the cleanest-looking cable runs possible with minimal effort.
Lian Li Edge Gold 1200W – Included Cables
With Lian Li’s white EG1200G power supply comes white PSU cables with white connectors and sleeving. Note that the 12V-2×6 power connectors on this PSU have blue ends, allowing users to see at a glance if their cables are not fully inserted.
Note that this PSU ships with two 12V-2×6 cables. One is a native 12V-2×6 cable on both ends, while the other has two 8-pin connectors on the other side. Both cables are rated at 600W. These cable options could be useful for GPUs with two 12V-2×6 connectors that don’t consume much more than 600 watts of power. Is this PSU ready for high-end RTX 5090 GPU models?
Cable Clash?
One thing that I will note about Lian Li’s Edge Hub is that using it would be challenging if you have already installed your PSU cable. However, if you remove the hub and then connect cables, the hub can be reconnected with relative ease. Regardless, it is a useful add-on that can make PC cable management a lot simpler.
