Metro Exodus’ DLSS Receives A Massive Quality Boost – Graphical Quality Tested

Metro Exodus PC Performance Review - RTX On!

DLSS Quality on the Metro Exodus’ Latest Patch

Nvidia’s promise with DLSS was that the quality of images would improve over time, with Nvidia constantly finding new data to add to their deep learning program. More data that their supercomputer can crunch through to create better versions of their algorithm, both in terms of performance and image quality.

Thanks to Metro Exodus’ latest patch, in conjunction with Nvidia’s latest drivers, the quality of DLSS within the game has increased significantly, so much so that we can actually recommend using the feature now. This increase in graphical fidelity bodes well for the future of DLSS.

DLSS Today – Is it as good as native resolution rendering?

It’s now time to return to our infamous bridge scene, where DLSS has been pushed to its limits thanks to lots of small details, distant lines and sharp angles. On day-1, additional blur was noticeable immediately, but now the difference is much more difficult to spot, especially while the game is in motion.

As before, the image below is an 800×450 sample of a 4K image that was taken using an RTX 2080 Ti graphics card.

Before this patch, even the gun model was blurred by DLSS, but now things are much sharper. Yes, some details are not as sharp with DLSS, such as the distant trees, but these details are extremely difficult to spot in actual gameplay. We’d almost argue that the difference is impossible to spot without a side-by-side comparison. This is a huge improvement from Metro Exodus.

In this next shot, we took another look at Metro Exodus’ main menu using an RTX 2060 at 1080p, where we see that the blurring effect of DLSS has been greatly reduced. Yes, we can see a lot more stairstepping/aliasing in the DLSS image, but it is hard to argue that this isn’t a huge improvement over the game’s original DLSS implementation.

At 1080p more graphical sacrifices are noticeable than at 4K, but at least now DLSS doesn’t sit in the category of “avoid at all costs”, as it did with its day-1 implementation.

The image below is a close up of one of Metro Exodus’ pistols, giving us a close-up view of a 4K image of the terrain of the Caspian location and a gun model. With DLSS turned on it will be difficult to spot the differences between the two images, which is amazing after considering the fact that this 800×450 image is less than a twentieth of a full 4K image.

At 4K the difference between DLSS and 4K is extremely hard to spot with Metro’s latest patch, so much so that even keen-eyed gamers will need to be actively searching for the differences to spot them. We could mention a few here, but these details are so small that you would never notice them in gameplay.
