Resolution Scaling – Can upscaling look good? 

Kena: Bridge of Spirits doesn’t support FidelityFX Super Resolution or DLSS, but it does support Resolution Scaling within Unreal Engine 4. Unreal Engine 4 can upsample Kena from lower resolutions to higher resolutions to deliver higher framerates to gamers who don’t have strong enough hardware for a native resolution gameplay experience. 

For gamers who use 4K screens, using a lower resolution scale can be a good way to deliver higher framerates within games without significantly lowering their game’s image quality. In the case of Kena: Bridge of Spirits, we could barely notice a difference between native 4K and 90% 4K, aside from the 15% framerate boost that it gave us. Lower resolution scales gave us noticeable reductions in image quality, but that is the case for all resolution scaling technologies.

Using a 4K screen, we could barely notice the difference between native 4K and 90% 4K, and that was when we were trying to spot the difference. When The game is in motion, we couldn’t spot the difference, aside from the framerate benefits that the lower internal resolution gave us. When we play Kena next, we will be using a 90% resolution scale at 4K.

At a resolution scale of 75%, image quality differences are easier to spot. That said, the game still looks great at 75% of 4K. Yes, things aren’t as sharp, but Kena’s art style doesn’t call for the sharpest pixels possible. If you need the performance, resolution scaling is a great option to exploit.
