Crucial LE MX300 750GB SSD Review

Crucial LE MX300 750GB SSD Review

Conclusion

With any emerging technology there is always an awkward transition between what is currently available and the potential of the new methodology. Solid State Drives took a while to make the most of the bandwidth afforded to the SATA protocol and in the early days there was a clear delineation between enthusiast grade products and the ones that the majority of us could afford. However, in the last couple of years or so even the most value option has been able to maximise the speeds we see.

That puts the Crucial LE MX300 750GB in a curious no-mans land.

On the one hand you can look at it solely as a 750GB SSD, and if you wish to do that then the pricing is in keeping with the current range of Crucial products, with the 500GB MX200 about fifty quid cheaper and the 1TB MX200 about fifty quid more expensive. With the 6Gb/s limitations of the SATA connection then the MX300 is just as fast as those and slots neatly into the Crucial range. Certainly if you’re in the market for a big SSD but can’t quite stretch to the 1TB model then this is just the thing.

To merely look at it as a 750GB SSD is somewhat underplaying the situation though. After all, this has the latest Micron 3D NAND installed. A technology which should rapidly provide massive capacity increases whilst remaining relatively affordable. Certainly if the pricing of this Limited Edition MX300 is anything to go by then the pricing difference between regular NAND and the 3D type is about the same, rather than the shock we all felt when the first SSDs hit the market.

With a technology that is capable of increased bandwidth, such as SATA Express, M.2 or even a PCI based drive then the benefits and speed of the 3D NAND will be brought into sharp focus. As it is, right now, today, you have to have the pride in knowing that you own something at the cutting edge, even if the raw results don’t necessarily back that up.

Speeds are excellent across the board, whether you’re transferring something massive or copying a bunch of small block files. The Crucial LE MX300 750GB is a glimpse into the future and whilst its not life-changing in its current guise it is great to see that Crucial haven’t gouged the public on price just because it’s new. Definitely worth a closer look and it wins our OC3D Approved Award.
