It’s a huge change to see a Samsung drive in a blue box. We’re so used to their black packaging. It’s a very nice colour. After all these years it’s a bit of a surprise though. Almost as much of a shock as a label which proclaims Gen5 but also only 5000 MB/s transfer speeds.

We must be very old fashioned. We see a plastic lid on a plastic box and imagine removing the lid will build up static electricity. Static not famed for its compatibility with delicate electronics. Samsung know better than us though. Just be careful when sliding the Samsung 990 Evo out that you don’t bend it.

The Samsung 990 Evo is certainly a slender thing. One sided and no built in heatsink makes it, to quote Monty Python, only wafer thin.

Usually Samsung drives are either red or orange, depending upon performance. Light blue is new to us. Or at least we can’t remember one in this hue. Perhaps the Korean giant is taking a new approach. Certainly this is the first of their drives that isn’t going balls-to-the-wall for high speeds.
