Nobody would accuse storage drives of having the worlds most exciting packaging, and despite being a portable option the Samsung T9 2TB Portable SSD is no exception. A simple product shot, some information, and the promise of a peak transfer rate that we’re here to test.

The T7 drive had a silver metallic coating, whilst the T9 is a very rubbery one. This has benefits to its robustness as it works as a perfect shock absorber. If there is a negative, and it’s visible here, is that the rubber is particularly soft and thus picks up fluff and dirt without blinking. Out of the box, onto our desk, and boom, covered in detritus.

Connectivity is simple enough with a USB Type-C interface and activity light being all that you need. It’s crazy how much Type-C has dominated the market, partly because you don’t have to do the Type-A cable dance where it only goes in the third way up, but also because you can push a lot of voltage through it and thus don’t require external power for most devices.

Speaking of cables, Samsung provide you with both a Type-C to Type-A and a Type-C on both ends. You’ll want to use the full Type-C to maximise your transfer rates as the Samsung T9 2TB takes full advantage of the USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface to attain it’s enormous speeds.

We don’t get a lot of portable drive in the office, but as well as the ones we’ve previously reviewed – that have sadly vanished into the ether during the transfer to our new website – we’ve also got the Cooler Master Oracle with a 1TB M.2 and the Corsair GTX 240GB stick to compare to, alongside the Samsung T7, the Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q and an ASUS USB Enclosure.
