ASUS Strix GL702Z Ryzen Laptop Review

Much like we saw with our review of the XG32V monitor, the Strix design works beautifully on such a large surface area. The packaging for the GL702Z is about as small as we’ve seen for a laptop in some time, with zero wasted space. There is no doubt it would catch your eye as you walked passed it.

  

After the craziness of the twin power supply MSI we return to normal with the GL702Z. A right angled plug connects to the left hand corner of the chassis. In fact there is nothing around the back at all beyond the all important air vents.

  

The Strix chassis comes in a brushed black aluminium case which – as you can see below – does quickly gain finger prints. The logo and stripes have a gorgeous mirror look when the laptop is off and glow bright red when it’s on. It’s not often something looks as nice unpowered as when it’s running, but we love the looks here.

  

Connectivity is a little shy of the plethora of options we’ve seen on a lot of the Intel based laptops, but you still have an HDMI, card reader, Type C USB 3.1 port and 3 USB 3.1 Gen1 ports, as well as a mini DisplayPort, RJ45 and the standard audio jacks.

  
  

The keyboard is your regular laptop chiclet style, with red lighting coming from underneath the keys and through the lettering as you can see both at the foot and top of this page. Much like the ROG logo that adorns the back of the display the keys look nice when they’re off as well as powered up. The GL702Z also has the somewhat – for the models we review at least – unique quality of having a UK layout. Lovely.
