AMD to offer “FSR 4 Upgrade” option for all FSR 3.1 games with RDNA 4 GPUs

AMD’s FSR 4 tech should work on all games with FSR 3.1 at launch

When AMD launches its RX 9070 series of RDNA 4-powered graphics cards, a lot of games are going to be upgraded with support for AMD’s AI-powered FSR 4 upscaler.

Thanks to AMD’s FSR 3.1 technology, games with AMD’s newest upscaler feature the company’s “Upgradable FSR API.” This feature enabled easy upgrades to AMD’s “future versions of FSR.” Now, we know that AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU drivers will enable FSR support on seemingly all FSR 3.1 games. Note that this information was revealed in one of AMD’s CES preview slides for FSR 4.

Until now, this information from AMD’s CES Preview slides was without context. Nowhere else in AMD’s CES slide deck is AMD’s “FSR 4 Upgrade” feature mentioned. Now, thanks to @Kepler_L2, more light has been shed on this feature. AMD’s “FSR 4 Upgrade” is a driver-level feature for RDNA 4 GPUs that uses AMD’s “Upgradable FSR API.” This allows for FSR 4 upgrades for all games that support FSR 3.1.

This new “FSR 4 Upgrade” also explains how AMD was able to showcase FSR 4 at CES 2025 in Ratchet and Clank’ Rift Apart. If AMD can upgrade from FSR 3.1 to FSR 4 with a driver-level override, they could theoretically showcase FSR 4 with any FSR 3.1 compatible PC game. AMD didn’t necessarily need to work with Nixxes or Sony to showcase FSR 4.
