Nvidia delivers Smooth Motion Frames support to RTX 40 series GPUs with new preview driver

Nvidia’s GeForce 590.26 preview driver had added Smooth Motion support to RTX 40 series GPUs

Nvidia has released a preview version of its first 590-series GeForce drivers, giving developers a chance to work with Nvidia’s latest drivers and the features they enable. With their GeForce 590.26 driver, Nvidia has added support for Shader Model 6.9. Furthermore, Nvidia has added Smooth Motion support to its RTX 40 series graphics cards. This inclusion was first spotted by Orwennes on the Guru of 3D Forums.

What is Smooth Motion? It’s Nvidia’s driver-level Frame Generation technology. It is Nvidia’s answer to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames technology, which allows gamers to utilise frame generation in almost any game. While this feature will not deliver visuals on par with a game-integrated frame generation solution, it is a useful add-on. This is especially true for older games with framerate caps.

Nvidia promised that it would add Smooth Motion support to its RTX 40 series GPUs earlier this year. Now it appears that this feature will be introduced with Nvidia’s GeForce 590 driver branch.

A Guru 3D Forum user, Macer, used Nvidia’s new preview driver to enable smooth motion on his RTX 4090 graphics card. He played World of Warcraft with a framerate cap of 82 FPS and enabled Smooth Motion. This doubled his framerate to 164 FPS.

Nvidia’s GeForce 590.26 driver is currently available through Nvidia’s Developer page. Once logged in using a developer account, gamers can access Nvidia’s new driver. Note that Smooth Motion can only be enabled on Nvidia’s RTX 40 series GPUs using the Nvidia Profile Inspector, which is available on GitHub.
