Windows 11’s decade-old “update and shutdown” bug fixed with 25H2 update
Microsoft finally fixes Windows 11’s infamous “update and shutdown” bug
It’s official: Microsoft has finally fixed the “update and shutdown” bug that has plagued Windows 10 and 11 users for a decade. With its optional “KB5067036” update for Windows 11, Microsoft has finally acknowledged the longstanding bug and has issued a fix.
Until now, many Windows 10 and Windows 11 users have had their PCs “update and restart” when they specifically told their systems to “update and shutdown”. For almost a decade, a large number of Win10/11 users basically had their PCs lie to them when giving them the option to “update and shutdown” their systems.

- Improved: Addressed underlying issue which can cause “Update and shutdown” to not actually shut down your PC after updating.
In a sense, this longstanding bug has become emblematic of Windows’ decline as an OS. Over time, Windows has become more bloated and clunky. Data harvesting and advertisements plague the OS, and internet searching has made the Windows search bar slow and increasingly unusable. This has enabled the rise of SteamOS in the handheld PC market, which consistently outperforms Windows due to its leaner, more power-efficient design.

Is Microsoft finally taking Windows seriously again?
In September, Microsoft announced that they were reuniting its Windows team under a single banner. Since 2018, Windows’ development has been split into two teams. The core of the Windows platform fell under Azure, and the client parts of Windows became part of Microsoft’s “Experiences and Devices” team. This split came three years after the release of Windows 10 and three years before the release of Windows 11. Now, both teams are under unified leadership.
With increasing competition from Linux, and Google’s plan to merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform for PCs, Microsoft needs to improve Windows to prevent a loss in market share. Fixing their longstanding “update and shutdown” bug could be part of an effort to improve Windows and combat competition.
Microsoft is also working on gaming-focused improvements for Windows 11. This is part of the new “Xbox full screen experience“, with Microsoft aiming to increase the battery life and gaming performance of handheld PCs. Microsoft is clearly aware of Windows’ issues. That said, it remains to be seen whether the company can fix its OS’ core issues.
