5-year-old Ryzen chip becomes Amazon UK’s best-selling CPU

AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X has become Amazon UK’s top-selling CPU

DDR5 memory prices are through the roof, creating a nightmare situation for PC builders. The problem has gotten so bad that many PC builders have opted to avoid DDR5 memory altogether. PC builders are now upgrading to older CPU platforms with DDR4 memory support, making AMD’s ageing AM4 Ryzen CPUs popular once again.

Right now, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X is Amazon UK’s top-selling CPU. With its £159.99 price and DDR4 memory support, this five-year-old CPU has become increasingly appealing to PC builders. While this Zen 3 CPU is old, newer Zen 4 and Zen 5 CPUs require DDR5-based CPU platforms, making complete systems insanely expensive. With AM4 socket support, Zen 3 CPU buyers can use more affordable DDR4 memory, which remains available at reasonable prices.

The Ryzen 7 5800X is one of the best mainstream Zen 3 CPUs available. While AMD’s 3D V-Cache-enhanced Ryzen 7 5700X3D and Ryzen 7 5800X3D are the best options for gamers, they are no longer available as new CPUs from retailers. This is why many gamers (and us) have called on AMD to bring back its Zen 3 X3D gaming CPUs.

DDR5 memory prices have gone insane

DDR5 memory kits have almost quadrupled in price since September. This has made building a DDR5-based PC practically unaffordable. Because of this, the sales of new DDR5-based CPUs and motherboards have plummeted. Sadly, the DDR5 memory shortage is expected to worsen, which could lead to further price increases in 2026.

Why are DDR5 memory prices so bad? G.Skill has stated that DDR5 prices have risen because of “global supply constraints and shortages”. These shortages are because of the insane demand for new AI infrastructure. So if you want to blame anyone for high DDR5 prices, blame AI companies and their insane datacenter buildouts. They are why prices are rising for DRAM and the products that use it.
