32GB RTX 5080 – Chinese modders reportedly build what Nvidia won’t

Chinese GPU repairers have reportedly built 32GB RTX 5080 GPUs, and this could impact GPU supply

A Chinese GPU technician has claimed that modders have successfully built 32GB RTX 5080 GPUs, doubling the VRAM capacity of one of Nvidia’s top graphics cards.

This mod, if legitimate, makes Nvidia’s RTX 5080 much more appealing for workstation users and for AI applications. The mod would add 16GB of additional GDDR7 memory to the graphics card, having a dual impact on the GPU market. First, it removes gaming-oriented RTX 5080 GPUs from circulation; second, it uses 16GB of extra GDDR7 memory, contributing to memory shortages.

Modders are reportedly turning Nvidia’s RTX 5080 into “Turbo” GPUs with blower-style cooling solutions. This turns Nvidia’s RTX 5080 into a graphics card that’s suitable for multi-GPU AI workstations.

More VRAM than an RTX 5080 SUPER

Leaked specifications suggest that Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 5080 SUPER features 24GB of GDDR7 memory. If true, this GPU will use eight 3GB GDDR7 modules. Nvidia’s modded RTX 5080 GPUs will use sixteen 2GB GDDR7 modules, with modules on both sides of the GPU’s PCB. This gives the GPU 32GB of GDDR7 memory. However, it is worth noting that the GPU has access to no additional memory bandwidth in this configuration.

It is not uncommon for Chinese modders to reform Nvidia’s consumer-grade RTX graphics card to create workstation-oriented products. If modders have succeeded in creating 32GB RTX 5080 GPUs, it may only be a matter of time before other Nvidia GPUs are modded in a similar way. If a similar mod were applied to an RTX 5090, a theoretical 64GB RTX 5090 could be created.
