Is Ebuyer no more?
Ebuyer could be closing down
– Update – Ebuyer has entered administration
Ebuyer, one of the UK’s larger PC retailers, could be closing its doors. We have been informed that the company’s staff were sent home earlier today, leading us to suspect that the company faces closure.
This news comes less than two years after BOX, another UK PC retailer, closed down. While BOX has since relaunched under new ownership, the original company’s closure highlights the challenges facing digital retailers. Demand for PC components has slowed since the end of the COVID pandemic, creating a tough market for retailers, especially those eying expansion.
In 2023, Ebuyer was acquired by Mark Reed and Rich Marsden for an undisclosed sum. Back then, the duo reportedly aimed to expand the business’s operations. These plans appear to have gone nowhere.
We have been told that the company is facing financial challenges. One potential buyer has allegedly pulled out of negotiations. If our sources are correct, the company needs to find a new buyer quickly or close its doors.
We have confirmed that Urban Logistics Acquisitions 6 Limited has filed a “Winding Up Petition” against Ebuyer (source). This is an application to the courts to close or “wind up” a company that cannot pay its debts. This process is also known as a “compulsory liquidation”. Urban Logistics Acquisitions 6 Limited is the company that owns the building that Ebuyer operates from.
Bad times for the UK’s tech retail sector
If Ebuyer closes down, the UK’s PC components market will have lost one of its largest players. Ebuyer sells full PCs, individual components, accessories, and more. The loss of Ebuyer would have a huge impact on the UK’s PC market. If the company closes, the UK will have lost one of its “big three” PC components retailers. This would leave Overclockers UK and Scan UK as the country’s largest PC components retailers.
This is a developing story, so we expect more information to become available in time.
