ASUS ROG Delta USB RGB Headset Review

Conclusion

As you would expect from a company which has produced quite as many different models as ASUS have, there have been some hits and some misses through the ranges. Obviously everyone has different requirements and a selection of budgets available to them, but we’ve got the experience of a massive array of headsets which begs the question; Is the ROG Delta deserving of the ROG brand?

Indeed it is.

Let’s get the most important bit out of the way first. The sound quality is really very good, with the four DACs working well across the frequency spectrum to ensure that every element of whatever it is you’re listening to is handled well. There is clear separation between the effects/instruments and so much headroom that you can pump up the volume without ever losing that clarity and definition. As befits a headset which is so committed to sitting at the high-end of the gaming headset market the general audio profile is neutral. If your input is bass heavy like you’re sat behind a minigun, then the Delta can pound your chest like little else. If, however, it’s a more subtle sound like those in stealth games and the like then that clarity across the board shines just as brightly. So often a gaming headset ends up being dominated by the bass that it’s always pleasant to have a broader soundscape. It makes the whole listening experience more pleasant when you’re not limited to certain games, or musical genres, or just action films etc. The ROG Delta is a headset for all seasons.

One area ASUS have worked hard on is the comfort of the ROG Delta headset. Sometimes headsets can feel like you’ve put your head in a vice, yet others feel as if they’d slide off at the smallest gust of breeze. The Delta has less clamping force than some previous ASUS headphones we’ve reviewed but never feels loose. The shaping of the ear cups greatly assists in the in-use comfort too. With most of us owning D shaped ears, or at least not circular ones, it never made much sense that so many over-ear headsets are equipped with round ear cups, so the D shaping on the Delta (aha) both makes sense on a practical level and works well in actuality. The hybrid ear covers provide excellent sound insulation whilst remaining cool during long sessions, but if you’re a die-hard foam lover then you’ll be pleased to know a cloth pair are included in the package. We’d suggest giving the hybrid ones a go though, as we’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised. There is none of the hot-ear syndrome that leather covers often bring.

Lastly the build quality is outstanding. Every element is extremely rugged, the plastics feel high quality, there isn’t any unwanted or worrisome flex or creaking. Everything about it gives you confidence that it will last the journey. Even the way the cable is attached to the headset itself is reinforced more than we normally see, and thus eliminates a weak spot. The lighting is up to ASUS’ usual high standards, even though in our review sample you can only change all of the lighting at once because we’re reviewing it prior to the full software launch. In the future there will be eight lighting sections if you want to wear your clan colours, or just have fun with a certainly pattern. For the moment though the only software is the AURA lighting, and that has all the options you’d expect to find and the headset delivers rich saturation where necessary. If you want more subtle shades it does seem to fade to white too easily, but most of us run with colours in the rainbow and here it’s fine.

With the Type-C connector and supplied Type-A adaptor enabling connection to pretty much anything you can think of, multiple DACs working in harmony to provide fantastic audio quality, a robust build and very comfortable use, the ASUS ROG Delta USB RGB Headset is unquestionably worthy of the lauded ROG branding. At an MSRP of £180 it’s at the premium end of the market, but the performance more than matches the expectations of this price tag, thus it wins our OC3D Enthusiast Award.
