Conclusion

The Coolermaster Masterpulse MH320 is a headset design for those of you who are investing in your first headset as you dip your toe into the world of online communication.

At this end of the market, there are loads of headsets to choose from and such is the ubiquity of the 40mm drivers with a 20Hz-20kHz frequency response that there is usually not a lot to choose between them on an aural level.

Driver size tends to equate to a sense of space and airiness, speaking in generalities here, with 40mm drivers being very tight and slightly bass-heavy, 50mm drivers giving great mid-range clout, bigger than that being usually for the audiophiles. Similarly, whether your headset has an open back – adds airiness and a sense of space to the soundscape – or closed back such as we have here – tightens the bass and also reduces noise leakage into the room – can make a difference too.

With small drivers on a closed back design, the Masterpulse MH320 leans heavily towards the bassier end of the audio spectrum at the cost of some clarity at the higher end of the frequency range. With so many games falling into the ‘roaring engine/thumping gunfire/loud punching’ side of things this isn’t so much of a detriment as it might seem, because the MH320 is tuned right in the sweet spot of the things gaming finds important. It is somewhat to the detriment of its performance as an all-rounder and anyone looking for the perfect medium to break out their Chopin, Merchant Ivory films or what-have-you should probably look a little further up the price range.

The build quality is good, with the metal headband providing far more rigidity than one normally sees at this price point whilst also handily erasing the need for hinges, the achilles heel of nearly every value headset. The Coolermaster Masterpulse MH320 is unlikely to win any beauty contests and won’t make your ears weep with joy at hitherto unheard sounds in old favourites. BUT, if you want a headset which allows you to hear the noises your games make, talk to your friends and does so in a package that won’t fall apart within a week and at a price that won’t cause you to have to sleep on the sofa for a few days, then the MH320 is a perfect entry level headset at a very tempting price point.
