HYTE Y40 PC Case Review

A deeper look at the HYTE Y40

Much like its predecessor, the HYTE Y60, the Y40 is a striking PC case. That said, the Y40 does look a bit more “standard” than its bigger brother, mostly thanks to this case’s more standard box-like aesthetic. The Y60 featured three glass panels that came together to create an almost single-bent-panel aesthetic, whereas the Y40 only features two panels that sit at a right angle to each other. This makes the HYTE Y40 look a lot more like other competing PC enclosures.

Like the Y60, the Y40 also features the same right angled design aesthetic. These locations are air air can be taken into or expelled from the chassis, offering users a powerful visual element as well as space for airflow. These lines also flow down the side of the HYTE Y40, giving the case some nice continuity.

The white side panel of the HYTE Y40 acts as one of the case’s primary air intakes, which can be fitted with either two 120mm fans or two 140mm fans. This area can also be used to install a 240mm or 280mm liquid cooling radiator, should one be needed.

At the rear of the HYTE Y40 we can see the HYTE’s unique Y-series PCIe layout, a 120mm exhaust fan, and plenty of cable tie down locations for those who want some tidy out-of-system cable management.

Below we can see that this case can support up to four-slot graphics cards, though we would recommend that HYTE Y40 users use triple-slot graphics cards or thinner to maximise the gap between your GPU and this case’s side panel window.

One of the things that we like about HYTE is its stylised elements. Inside of the Y40’s side panel is an integrated dust filter and some unique HYTE lettering and design. This design work is completely unnecessary, but it is nice to see a manufacturer at least try to make their side panels look nice on the inside.

Inside the HYTE Y40 we can see space for two 2.5-inch SSDs and a large CPU cut-out. Additionally, we can also see a lot of cable tie-down points for cable management, which is nice to see.

Below the HYTE Y40’s PSU shroud, we can see a single 120mm intake fan that pulls air from the bottom of the chassis. this air is pushed upward and towards the GPU area of the chassis. This fan location is awkward, as it does require strong cable malmanagement from Y40 users to avoid cable/fan collisions. It is also worth noting that the bottom structural element of this case also blocks 10-15mm of the fan.

Here we can see HYTE’s Y40 PCIe 4.0 riser card. This riser card is pre-installed within the case and can be used with all modern motherboards. This riser card is a must if you plan to use this case with a discrete graphics card, as otherwise this case only supports half-height PCIe cards.

Below is the HYTE Y40’s strongest design element, and cut-out below the case’s three 120mm top fan mounts. This cut-out makes it easy for PC builders to install or remove motherboard-connected fans, ARGB connections, or 4+4-pin CPU power connectors. This is an awesome feature, and something that I expect other companies to be inspired by in the future. This design element is incredibly simple and incredibly useful. It’s a wonder that nobody else had thought of this yet!

HYTE Y40 PC Case Review

Overall, HYTE’s Y40 is a case that is easy to build in that is striking to look at can contain a lot of strong hardware. The case is limited by the fact that most add-on cards are limited to half-height form factors, but in terms of aesthetics this case is hard to beat.
