AMD 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX and 2950X Preview

AMD 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX and 2950X Preview

Conclusion

AMD’s Ryzen 2nd Generation Threadripper processors are designed to take the High-End Desktop market to the next level. Last generation, AMD’s 1950X proved to the company’s most popular TR4 processor, showcasing demand for extreme core counts from small-medium sized businesses, high-end consumers and even the growing streaming market. This demand prompted AMD to push further, beyond the extreme and into the realm of absurdity.

With Ryzen, AMD is delivering higher core counts at lower prices than ever before, and the same applies to Threadripper. Thanks to this effort, app developers are working harder to increase multi-threading support in their applications, making these extreme-level products more usable than ever before. Before now, you would have been called a lunatic for asking for a 32-core processor for under $2000, but today AMD has delivered just that, shaking the CPU market to its core in the process.

Traditionally, scaling processors to higher core counts was an expensive process for everyone involved, be it the CPU manufacturer or the consumers who purchased them. With their modular Ryzen product design, AMD has been able to deliver higher core counts and pricing levels that would have been considered impossible a few years ago, showcasing the extraordinary benefits of AMD’s MCM (Multi-Chip-Module) CPU designs. This is what makes Threadripper and EPYC so groundbreaking, though it makes us wonder how long it will be before Intel creates their own MCM CPU designs.

Today, we are left with uncontainable bubbles of excitement for the CPU market, with product evolution and innovation happening at a faster pace than we have seen for around a decade. We are not only excited to see what AMD’s Threadripper 2950X and 2990WX are capable of but for what both AMD and Intel has in store for us in the years to come.

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX will be available on August 13th, so you can probably guess when AMD’s review embargo will lift. We will say that our reviews for AMD’s Threadripper 2990WX and 2950X will release on the same day, so you can expect some performance numbers and further thoughts on AMD’s Threadripper 2nd Generation products soon.
