CPU Temperatures

Our CPU temperature testing is a juxtaposition between best and worst case scenarios. We run a seriously heavyweight CPU cooler, which shows the best use case, and then torture the system for 30 minutes to get our peak reading. Otherwise known as the worst case scenario. And with such beefy clock speeds and the X3D technology it’s a little hefty on the power. Albeit far below the chonkier Intel options.

Conclusion

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D is one of those rare products which almost doesn’t need reviewing. Such is the consistency of the AMD Ryzen products, the concept of a silicone lottery almost doesn’t exist. Additionally AMD have honed their manufacturing to such a degree that you aren’t going to get a nice, or nasty, surprise.

With the Ryzen 7 9850X3D AMD promise a slightly faster clock speed than the 9800X3D, and that’s exactly what you get. You still get 8 cores and 16 threads. A good amount of power for most every day users whilst still leaving room above for the Ryzen 9s. As you saw from our testing it, generally, was a bit better than the 9800X3D, without truly dropping our jaws. Additionally this extra clock speed meant that our gaming benchmarks benefited the most.

Obviously gaming is the primary focus of the X3D range of processors, and the 9850X3D does nothing to change this. The 3D V-Cache technology already provides a handy uptick in gaming performance, and by giving their 8 Core CPU some extra clock speed that extra performance is even more pronounced. If you’re just interested in gaming, then the 9800X3D or a lower budget X3D option will be impressive. Similarly if you want a more well-rounded rig then either of the 98x0X3D CPUs has your back. Only if editing videos or similar CPU heavy rendering tasks takes up the majority of your time will the Ryzen 7 9850X3D be found somewhat wanting.

All of which means that the Ryzen 7 9850X3D fits that very tiny niche that its name might imply. Gaming on a budget? Go for the surprisingly good 7500X3D. Need something that crushes Vegas or Blender too? The Ryzen 9 X3D processors really make their extra cores count.  If, however, you’ve been eyeing the 9000 X3D processors enviously, then the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is in the price performance sweet spot thanks to its increased clock speed, and wins our OC3D Gamers Choice Award.
