AMD Ryzen Retest 1500x 1600x 1800x Review

AMD Ryzen Retest Review

Overclocking

First up is overclocking. We want to draw attention again incase you missed it on the opening page that we have got 3 all new retail CPU’s for this review. Some of you thought the 4GHz overclock we got on our samples from AMD were not representative of what real users were able to achieve. As youll see below the 1500x and the 1600x wouldnt in fact push past the 3.9GHz marker but the 1800x yet again did reach that hallowed overclocking point so many of you are hoping for. The silicone lottery comment is still valid here even if it is only a 100MHz difference we are talking about.

The Ryzen 1500x originally gave us a 3.99 GHz clock speed at 1.395v vCore with 3192 MHz DDR4. That has changed on this updated BIOS and retail CPU to 3.89 GHz with 3325 MHz DDR4 at 1.384v vCore. Hardly earth shattering. Let’s check out the 1600X then.

We have a similar story here. Originally it was 3.99 GHz @ 1.384v with 3192 MHz DDR4, which has now become 3.89 GHz @ 1.373v with 3324 MHz DDR4. Hopefully the flagship Ryzen 7 1800X will bring us better news.

Our first overclock with the Ryzen 7 1800X was 3.99 GHz @ 1.417v vCore but only 2666 MHz DDR4 (original launch review and BIOS). This BIOS upgrade has kept the CPU overclock pretty much identical, although the memory has been greatly improved up to 3459 MHz DDR4.

So far then it’s hardly a game-changing success story. Let’s discover if the benchmark results show any improvements that might be less obvious than raw clock speed numbers.
