ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero Review

Introduction

The name Dark Hero carries a significant amount of cachet thanks to its use on the Crosshair motherboards. We reviewed that model here. It’s only natural that with the launch of the 14th Generation of Intel processors ASUS would return to that brand. With the new ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero they have done exactly that. It is almost the black version of the white Z790 Maximus Formula we’ve also shown off, just without the hybrid VRM heatsink design.

With so many new Z790 motherboards around, and being evolutions of extant Z790 motherboards, a lot of this will be very familiar to you. However, as this is the first Dark Hero in this particular format we couldn’t help but be interested to discover what this variant brings to the table.

Unquestionably the most attention grabbing thing is that huge ROG logo on the heatsink and IO shield combination. Even before you notice the massive ROG Eye logo on the M.2 heatspreaders down the bottom. Then you look a little closer and see how many fan headers there are. How many power stages. The sheer wealth of USB ports on the back. It’s clear that this isn’t part of the Maximus range for mere branding reasons, but instead is the kind of motherboard deserving of such a famous moniker.

Grab your beverage of choice, preferably a hot one as the winter draws in, and settle down for our review of the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero.
