Up Close

Any time we get a new ROG motherboard in that familiar black and red packaging we get a palpable sense of anticipation to see what accessories are included. Given the pricing of the high end ROG products the buyer always wants to drag out the box opening process for as long as possible to extract maximum value before it’s hidden away in a tower, and the Rampage VI Extreme gives you dozens of packets and wrappers and stickers and things to get stuck into before the main event.

The needs of the RGB lighting to be piercing means that ASUS have chosen to produce the Rampage VI Extreme with a serious amount of silver on the motherboard. Opinions are divided in the office about how successful this is in the naked glare of our photography lights, but there is no doubt at all that once it is ensconced in the dark confines of your case and the AURA Sync lighting is doing its thing that it looks spectacular.

Round the back the matte black IO shield is full of cut-outs fro the enormous amount of USB ports, as well as the connectors for the WiFi antennae and dual LAN that pump the information superhighway into your eyeballs 24 hours a day. We’re also big fans of having the Clear CMOS button easily to hand too. Not that the Extreme is fiddly to get running towards its overclocking limits, but anything beats hunting around amongst the cabling inside your case to find the button or, worse yet, remove the battery.
