Strix X870E-E Review

Conclusion

Normally one would expect the Strix Extreme to be at the peak of the ASUS range. However, since ASUS first dispensed with Formula and Extreme as names and instead went with F and E, that isn’t quite the case. The Crosshair Hero is probably the upper of the three ASUS X870s we’re reviewing today, the Strix X870-A at the lower end, and the Strix X870E-E in the middle. Nearly at the same place as the Crosshair Hero in terms of feature set. It just feels a little lower down the range because it has one PCIe 5.0 slot instead of the Hero’s two.

There is no doubt at all though that the ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E is still more than deserving of both the Strix bit of its name and the E. Even if you’re not used to the kind of features that you get on a motherboard, or maybe don’t understand what it all means, from comparison alone it’s clear the Strix X870E-E has much to recommend it. The power stage affects the smooth delivery of power to your processor and components, and the 18+2+2 110A Power Stage on the Strix is as good as any of the motherboards we’re reviewing today. And if that isn’t enough then you also get three (3!) Gen5 M.2 slots alongside two regular Gen4 ones. We know most of you won’t have three Gen5 M.2 drives just because they’re so expensive. However, having the option brings some futureproofing to the Strix X870E-E.

All The Connections

Elsewhere the Strix X870E-E ensures you’re not left wanting more places to plug things in. Seven fan headers, four front USB Type-A and one Type-C, with a further ten Type-A and four Type-C around the back. One of those is a 30W fast charge port, whilst two are the star of the AMD X870 chipset, the USB 4 40 Gbps pairing. Speedy. Wrap it all up with 5G LAN and WiFi 7 and clearly the Strix X870E-E  has plenty of options to suit everyone.

Performance is very much on a par with all the X870 motherboards we’re looking at today. That’s down to the consistency of AMDs chipset. Where the ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E chiefly scores highly is in those aforementioned connectivity areas. It has everything you could wish, both for today and tomorrow, and wins the ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E our OC3D Performance Award.
