ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Review

Board Tour
Grey is definitely the colour of the year. We often joke about the amount of cars we see in primer grey, and now we’re getting motherboard plastics in it. Yet this isn’t a white/silver motherboard. Odd.
The little ROG logo dust covers for the fan headers always make us happy. Such a pointless, but gorgeous, detail. Usually if someone goes the extra mile for things like this, you can be sure the rest is up to snuff.
Front panel USB is only of those QoL improvements we always appreciate. We’re always swapping stuff out of our rigs, so having fast ports at the front is a boon.
Storage on the X870 chipset seem to be heavily weighted towards M.2 drives and rightfully so. However, if you’ve got a pile of SATA drives it’s worth noting we’ve yet to see more than 4 ports on any of the new AMD motherboards and the Strix X870E-E is no exception.
Extra Cool
Lots of fan headers will always make us happy. We need to keep our systems cool, and we need to keep our cables tidy. The more headers we have, the easier it is to do both those things.
It’s cool that the lighting has shifted to mainly ARGB these days. With addressable RGB being about the same price as regular RGB it helps us personalise our rigs a little more. In a world where everyone apparently only has blue and pink lighting in the background of their videos and Twitch streams, ARGB allows us to stand out from the crowd.
If you want to keep the insane memory speeds available to you on the Strix X870E-E running smoothly on your DIMMs, a little cooling never hurts. Cooling that blends into the looks of your rig, rather than looking like a fan jury-rigged on, will always score highly.
Lastly around the back we have the AMD X870 chipsets party piece, 40G USB4 ports. The Strix X870E-E goes hard with all types of USB port to be honest. No matter what you’ve got and how much of it, you shouldn’t be short of space.
