Introduction

The motherboard marketplace is awash with items which have flash and flair to entice you into parting with your cash. For all the features and elements that there might be, most of us still just look at a motherboard to decide whether we’ll shortlist it and only then do we investigate whether it is the right one for us, rather than doing it the – much more sensible – other way around.

The ASUS Prime is very much for the people who pay attention to what features and technologies there are, and then perhaps worry about the aesthetics. It is this robust, no nonsense approach to providing the foundation upon which you can build a beastly PC that attracts us to it and the primary (ha) reason why the ASUS Prime is the motherboard we use to set a baseline any time there is a new CPU release we need to test.

With X299 appearing and supporting the new X range of Intel CPUs – Kabylake-X and Skylake-X – then we had to get the latest edition of the Prime Deluxe to see what it brings to the party.

Technical Specifications

As is becoming a theme judging by the X299 motherboards we’ve looked at so far, the ASUS Prime Deluxe contains everything you would hope to find on a modern motherboard. We have USB 3.1, four ports in fact, four PCI Express 3.0 slots too. The four theme continues with 4 GHz DDR4 support. In the words of a cheap TV advertisement, but wait, there’s more. Yes the 802/11ad WiFi supports 4Gb/s throughput, a marked improvement upon the 1.3 Gb/s that you get from the 802.11ac we’re all used to. Add to this dual LAN and something unique to the ASUS X299 Prime Deluxe, LiveDash, and there is a lot to tempt you away from the more obvious choices of Strix or ROG.
