ASUS X870E ROG Crosshair 2006 Preview
Crosshair 2006 Overview
Crosshair 2006 Overview
The packaging echoes the original. It might be a tiny thing, but we really appreciate it. This is no token effort. If you’re the person who signed off on this, we appreciate you.
A multitude of ROG eye designs. We still don’t like the “all squares” design, but it’s better than the awful glitched text the Strix models went with for a bit. Design for the sake of it, rather than for clarity.
One area the Crosshair 2006 doesn’t measure up to current ROG models, or the OG, is accessories. The box is very light. You get a ROG screwdriver which is about the most interesting thing.
By contrast, the Crosshair NV590SLI had a soundcard, stereo microphones, zip ties, thermistor cables (remember those?), USB expansion bracket and key chain, as well as all the regular cables. For, we repeat, £126.
Opening the box gives you a glimpse of the motherboard itself. The copper is dazzling. You get really used to all black motherboards.
This is the photo that divides opinion the most. The all copper look is gorgeous. Stunning. Cannot be faulted. However some of us like the nod to the old school blue and white plastics, and others – well, me – think that black plastics would make the copper pop without compromising the nods to ROG history.
Just because there are old-school aesthetics there are still cutting-edge elements everywhere. Nitropath RAM helps memory hit DDR5-9600 at its peak. To the left is the ASUS AIO Q-Connector that provides a simple AIO connection option that eliminates cables. Or, rather, moves them to an easier-to-tidy place.
Now we’re not ones to quibble, but 06-∞ is a bit hopeful given that the Sun will eat the Earth in a few billion years time. Maybe ASUS know something we don’t. Or perhaps they are taking the E=MC2 approach where the atoms of the Crosshair will continue to exist even when we’ve been reduced to nothing but thought.
