AMD Freesync 2 HDR Preview

We’ve always been huge fans of tech demos here at OC3D. It feels like recent years has seen a paucity of them. We recall back in the day that every new card came with a demo, be it Nvidia’s fairies or AMD’s Froblins. Thankfully the Freesync 2 HDR launch has also come with a new demo, Oasis, that shows of both the lack of screen tearing you can expect to find from the Freesync 2 technology, whilst giving you plenty of ways to tune the HDR to wow your eyes.

Naturally showing HDR to you on your non-HDR display is always going to be tricky. We’ve tried a few different methods and found that taking a photograph of the screen shows the clearest difference, even if it doesn’t remotely give you the full experience and ends up looking like we’ve just cranked up the contrast. As we say about many things – usually RGB lighting – it is something that looks infinitely nicer in real life than it does on a photograph, but it should still give you an indication of the benefits that you can achieve combining the Radeon 7 graphics card with the ASUS XG49VQ display and AMD’s Freesync 2 HDR.

Got that? Okay. The top picture is regular mode, whilst the bottom is with HDR enabled. The difference in darkness of the blacks is astounding, whilst – not pictured – the ability to see into the shadows is greatly enhanced in comparison to standard mode. It isn’t just demos that can show off the HDR though, as an ever growing list of games support it too.
