MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 Review

Conclusion

What really sets the MSI MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 apart from the 272 X50 we reviewed previously is the new AI at the heart of the OLED Care 3.0 update. This utilises the built in CMOS Sensor below the MSI logo to detect if you’re there or not. If you’re there then you don’t have to put up with things putting your monitor into standby. If you’re not, the 271QR immediately powers off to help save power and reduce the potential for burn-in. It’s certainly a useful feature if you’re up and down a lot, or spend time looking at things that the computer doesn’t count as stopping its inactivity timer.

Privacy

We understand MSI’s claims about the CMOS sensor not officially counting as a camera. We’re not entirely sure we find consolation in that. Anyone remember that famous photo of Zuckerberg with duct tape over his laptop webcam? Or been chatting about a particular product or destination only to suddenly get lots of targeted adverts for those things despite your phone or Alexa officially being off? Heck do you feel comfortable enough to have a listening bug Alexa in your home? We were on the internet when it was the wild west. Just because the people hacking you now are charging you for that privacy breach whilst pinky-swearing it’s not looking and listening without your permission doesn’t lessen fears. The CMOS Sensor could be used as a camera. That just isn’t its primary function.

Now you might be totally fine with that. You might find comfort in knowing your doorbell is facially recognising everyone who turns up to your home and checking what they buy to find out in what social bracket you exist. You might not care your phone or laptop can record you whenever it wants, so what’s the difference if your monitor does it? It’s a perfectly valid position to hold. And remember, where not suggesting it’s going to be MSI behind any nefarious use, just you need to know it’s a possibility. We’re not sure the global situation makes us feel more secure in the honesty of our governments to resist the temptation.

All The Good Stuff

Phew. Thankfully MSI still include all their trademark OLED Care functions. Boundary detection lessens luminosity on harsh edges to stop windows burning in. The Taskbar is handled likewise, as are logos. If you like watching lengthy sports with a permanent logo in the corner this will help tremendously.

With all that behind us the rest of the MPG 271QR X50 is easy to love. Just like the 272QP before it, the 1440P 27″ display hits the sweet spot between size and performance demand. 4K is all well and good, but we can’t think of many setups that would be able to run 4K @ 500Hz. Not unless you play Pong competitively. 1440P @ 500Hz is much more realistic in any title where that level of response is beneficial to your success. We know that plenty of games these days are synched to help ensure console gamers aren’t at a disadvantage compared to the PCGMR. But there are still titles where raw horsepower and response times can make a difference, and in those the MSI is a stunning option.

Gorgeous visuals as one would expect from an OLED panel. Incredible smoothness befitting a 500Hz refresh rate. Plenty of connectivity options and, of course, upgraded OLED Care options. The MSI MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 is perfect if you’ve got the niche use-case where it would win out over some of the more conservative refresh rates MSI offer.
