NZXT Function 2 MiniTKL Review

Introduction

It’s been a couple of years since NZXT first brought out their Function keyboard range. We showed them off to you at the time.

Since then NZXT have gone back and revised them. Not only have they changed the switch type from mechanical to optical, but they’ve revised much of the internals. Outwardly the design remains the same, which isn’t a bad thing. The majority of changes are under the hood. Firstly the TKL model has been dropped, leaving just the full size and MiniTKL models available. It is the MiniTKL we have for review today. The keycaps have undergone a big change, from ABS plastic to Double-Shot PBT. This is a polymer that is extremely hard wearing and found in keyboards at the higher end of the market.

The switches themselves are probably the primary new thing. The original NZXT Function had Gateron Red mechanical switches. 45 gram actuation pressure at 2.5mm. Linear response. All very familiar. The Function 2, by contrast, has NZXT’s own Swift Optical Switches. These are light, linear, but perhaps best of all have two actuation points. Either 1.5mm or, if your fingers are very accurate, 1mm. This is adjustable in the NZXT Cam software.

Elsewhere the Function 2 sports a massive 8000Hz polling rate and two layers of damping foam to ensure that things are as responsive as they are quiet. Let’s take a look.
