Corsair HX1000i 80 Plus Platinum iCUE Power Supply Review

Corsair HX1000i 80 Plus Platinum iCUE Power Supply Review

Introduction

Like carpets, beds, and PC cases, power supplies are one of the things in our lives that we change much less often than other things we might buy new versions of. No matter how much processor or graphics card performance increases, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia do all they can to keep the power draw below certain limits, ensuring that any decent PSU you already own will probably last you a while.

However, if you haven’t upgraded your PSU in a while you might not be aware of how hugely efficient they have become in recent times, as well as the many new QoL features available to you. Given the ridiculous energy prices at the moment when allied to the general expensive nature of parts and shipping, any opportunity to save yourself some expense in purchase price and usage has to be taken advantage of. Indeed, the cost of manufacture and shipping affects the big companies too, so it was a nice thing to see that Corsair have tried to revise their HXi series of power supplies – last updated in 2015 – without increasing the price.

Naturally we had to take a look and see how the latest edition of their wildly popular fully modular power supplies fares, and we’re utilising the popular 1000W model HX1000i rather than their beefier, but more enthusiast grade, HX1500i.

Technical Specifications

A huge 140mm fan promises to keep everything cool without deafening you, whilst 80 Plus Platinum certification should keep the efficiency, and thus total power draw at the wall, nice and low. High quality components promise to keep voltages stable and this is something that cannot be overlooked, particularly if you’re the kind of person who likes to overclock on the ragged edge of what is possible. The last thing you need is a PSU which wavers the voltage too much to let your overclock ‘stick’ without endless BSODs.
