Corsair HX1000i 80 Plus Platinum iCUE Power Supply Review

Conclusion

Whenever we’re dealing with hardware there is always a issue in how much information is really pertinent. After all, whilst a manufacturer might be interested in the fact their new architecture has better Z-Culling or a revised instruction set, is that the sort of information that the average consumer will be interested in? The information is there if you’re feeling particularly obsessive, but for most of us we just want to know whether it does the thing it is supposed to do, and how well does it do that? Regular readers will know it’s for the consumer who wants that information rather than the more granular minutiae that we use as the basis for our reviews.

When it comes to power supplies there is perhaps an even bigger split between specialist knowledge and that of the average user. After all, if you’re the type of person who understands the importance of something inside the HX1000i like “Half-Bridge MOSFETs array of LLC stage for resonant circuit” then perhaps you already know if this is the product for you.

For the rest of us we want to know if the power delivery is smooth and stable, if the fan is going to drive us mad with noise and if there are enough connectors for all our hardware. We might, particularly in the current climes, also want it to be efficient as efficiency lowers temperatures and power draw and is usually indicative of a well made item. Given how expensive the rest of our components are the last thing we need is to scrimp on a few quid for the power supply and plug a high-ripple, low-efficiency supply into our hugely expensive flagship graphics card or processor and fry them.

The newest HXi range of PSUs from Corsair continue their long lineage of excellent power supplies, providing tolerable ripple rates and excellent efficiency with a few extras dripped on top. As you saw from our ripple graph the HX1000i isn’t up there with the class leaders but neither is it disgraced. In efficiency terms it’s in the top ten and right on a par with the model it replaces. As for connectors you get a lot in the box, although many more if you get the HX1500i model, and they will be enough for a system with a lot of storage and a single graphics card.

In terms of extras the HX1000i has a large 140mm fan which runs quietly and can even zero RPM if the loading is low enough – desktop browsing etc. Should you want even finer control you can use the supplied USB connector to control it with the Corsair iCUE software where you can not only set a custom fan profile but also switch the HXi between Single Rail and Multi-Rail Over-Current Protection if you so choose.

The new Corsair HXi is a well-featured, efficient power supply with an awesome 10 year warranty.
