DLSS at 4K

At 4K we found that DLSS acted very differently than it did at 1440p, producing a cleaner image that was more similar to a native presentation. At 4K, there is none of the “sharpness filter” look that some of our 1440p shots had, making the image more pleasing to our eyes.

Please note that all of the images below are 800×450 sections of a full 4K image with a 1: 1-pixel ratio. The differences below are not as noticeable with a full 4K resolution on a standard-sized screen. To see full-sized versions of these images follow this link.

In this first shot, it is clear that there is some detail lost when using DLSS, but if we are honest, we barely noticed the difference at 4K on a 43-inch screen. These differences only became apparent in side-by-side comparisons afterwards, which is good news for DLSS.

These 800×450 images are a mere 23rd of a full 4K resolution of 3840×2160, making them a small part of a much larger image. That said, these shots are ideal for showcasing the differences in pixel-to-pixel quality of these DLSS on and DLSS off images.

We can see that when DLSS is enabled that some detail is lost and that the final image is blurrier. That said, at 4K these differences are hard to spot, especially while the game is in motion. The big question is whether or not the performance boost offered by DLSS is worth it.

In this next set of images, we can see once again that DLSS results in a loss in graphical quality, especially in the when looking at the grass at the bottom of the image.

That said, DLSS boosted our framerates in this scene from 27FPS to 42FPS on our RTX 2060 graphics card. This is equal to a performance boost of 55% at 4K, which is an astounding framerate boost. This huge increase in framerate is likely due to memory bandwidth limitations on our 6GB RTX 2060 graphics card.
