Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus PC Performance Review

With Wolfenstein II we suffer through a few issues when testing this game on various systems, from hitching issues related to Async compute to crashes upon startup that was fixed by deleting the game’s opening intro videos.

Wolfenstein II is not free of problems, though for the most part these issues were easily resolved, either by disabling Async compute on certain hardware or reloading the game it is “safe mode” to reset the game’s graphical options. 

All of the problems that we have faced have been easily resolved, though it is still a negative point for the game. Thankfully some of these issues have already been fixed with new driver updates of game patches, which hopefully means that all of these issues will be resolved quickly with future patches.

Game Data and Save Game Locations 

Some of Wolfenstein’s graphical settings can be used beyond the game’s highest Mein Leben! preset if the user wishes. We will not go into huge detail regarding potential edits, but here is the configuration file’s location if you are interested.

The game’s save files are also available to view here, which will allow you to make your own backups of save files outside of Steam’s cloud system.

Skipping the game’s lengthy Boot sequence

One of the most annoying aspects of testing games is the constant need to reboot the software, either to reset change the game’s graphical settings or make some other kind of edit between test runs. This makes long opening sequences annoying, making an option to remove them helpful to users. 

Thankfully Wolfenstein II’s opening sequence can be stopped by deleting or renaming a single movie file, which can be found at the location below. This will dramatically shorten the time it takes players to get into the game.
