Random read doesn’t show much in the way of an improvement. Infact despite the firmware upgrade we saw a decrease in both minimum and maximum transfer rates. Moreover, the fluctation in performance was greater following the firmware update.

HDTune is another popular Hard Disk Drive diagnostics and benchmark tool.

The read test reveals some interesting results. Like before, the Callisto starts off with a low transfer rate, followed by a brief spike. Things were looking good for the new firmware until the drive decided to settle at a slightly lower transfer rate than previously. All in all, a higher burst rate but a lower average.

Previously we picked up on some surprising write results…and not in a good way. Previously there was a huge dip in transfer rates, seeing write speeds south of 20MB/sec. The new firmware turns things around significantly with a consistent ~220MB/sec write.

Indeed we have seen a mixed bag of results so far; but what does CrystalDiskMark and PCMark Vantage reveal?
