Conclusion

The Samsung T7 Touch ticks a lot of boxes and is a very desirable product if you have even the tiniest desire for some extra storage.

Firstly the drive comes in a few capacities to fit both your budget and your needs. If you either use your device to film your vlog then naturally having a big capacity drive that will work with any Type-C enabled device, especially in a world where the ability to add an SD card to your phone has been largely eliminated in the quest for ever more uniform and water resistant designs. This works the other way around too if you are going on a long journey and want to take some films or your music library with you without clogging up your phone, particularly if the streaming services are unavailable. No matter how good your internet connection is the ease of transferring files by plugging a drive between your devices is significantly simpler than uploading to the cloud and then downloading again later on. Have it on the drive and use it there. Much easier.

So it’s convenient. But a USB stick is convenient too. The T7 Touch brings much more to the party.

Transfer speeds are often overstated in any manufacturer blurb and should be taken with an entire wheelbarrow of salt, but in the case of the Samsung their claimed transfer rates are matched in all of our testing. We tested with the USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C cable with its 10Gb bandwidth and the T7 absolutely rocked consistent transfer rates at all times and all block sizes. The simplicity and speed are a whole other league when compared to other external drives we’ve looked at, and used in our own personal life. Any opportunity to save time transferring files is something we are always pleased to have, especially as the majority of times we need portable storage it’s as we’re going out the door with a last minute file remembering we require.

If there has always been one issue with portable storage it’s security. Now we’re not pretending that the security on the Samsung T7 Touch is so bulletproof you can use it for government secrets, but between a password and fingerprint there is enough security to stop people casually hoovering off your content if you leave the drive lying around. Fingerprint scanning is less secure than a complicated password, but clearly if you require security above all other considerations then you need to spend some serious cash on an encrypted solution that is beyond the remit of the T7 Touch.

If you’ve ever found yourself wishing that you had more storage in a format that was easily connectable to any device, and also had enough security to deter less determined and knowledgable hackers the Samsung T7 Touch ticks every box. It looks gorgeous, is thin and light, and plenty fast enough for all your media needs. It’s much faster than SATA6 SSDs and wins the OC3D Enthusiast Award.
