One board, two flavours – Up close with the ASUS ROG Strix X870-F and X870-A

ASUS is catering to fans of both black and white motherboards with their new AMD/AM5 X870 range

ASUS has revealed a huge range of new 800-series AM5 motherboards at Gamescom, but two of our favourites are these new ROG Strix X870 models. Both motherboards feature the same board designs and specifications, but one is classic black while the other is white and silver. Meet the ASUS ROG Strix X870-A Gaming and ROG Strix X870-F Gaming.

Both motherboards feature strong I/O options, though both are somewhat paired back when compared to the Crosshair X870E Hero and Strix X870E-E Gaming. Regardless, both the X870-A and X870-F feature a lot of connectivity options, which includes dual USB4 40Gbps Type-C connections. Additionally, these boards support WiFi 7, 2.5 Gb ethernet, and sport ten other USB ports on its their rear I/O (5x USB 10Gbps Type-A, 1x 10Gbps Type-C, and 4x 5Gbps Type-A).

The White X870-A and Black X870-F feature a 16x PCIe 5.0 PCIe slot, and four M.2 SSD slots. Two of these M.2 slots are PCIe 5.0 ready, and the other two are PCIe 4.0. This allows users of these boards to have a strong mix of both fast and ultra-fast PCIe storage. Great news for video editors and other creators.

The primary difference between the ROG Strix X870-F Gaming WiFi and the ROG Strix X870A-Gaming WiFi comes down to style: the X870-F is draped in classic black, whereas the X870-A is draped in white and silver all the way down to its PCB.

While there are higher-end ASUS AM5 motherboards available, it is hard to not be impressed with what ASUS are offering with these new X870 offerings. These motherboards feature a wealth of connectivity options despite their lower-end status. Beyond that, they have plenty of power for overclocking with their 16+2+2 power configuration.

Both boards support up to 192GB of DDR5 DRAM over four DIMM slots, which is plenty for any consumer-grade workload. If you need more memory than that, you need a HEDT desktop or a server.

Sadly, we do not know how much these motherboards will cost. We are also unsure exactly when they will be available to purchase. We expect to learn more later this week at AMD’s Gamescom 2024 Gaming Festival this Friday.
