Corsair HS60 Pro Surround Headset Review

Conclusion

The Corsair HS60 Pro Surround is available in an all-black look or the black with yellow contrast that we have today. Looking at the pictures we think you’ll agree that whilst yellow is certainly a bold colour choice and one unlikely to mesh with other peripheral choices, it is also subtle enough that is doesn’t remotely dominate proceedings and instead just helps show off the Corsair branding in a very understated manner.

Comfort is a key component of any headset and the HS60 Pro Surround passes this particular test with flying colours. There is liberal use of memory foam on all the points of contact which cushion it against your skull. Additionally the light weight of the aluminium frame – the whole headset is 320g – ensures that you can wear this all day without issue. This is especially good if you’re one of those people who isn’t overly keen on things on your head. It fits snugly without pressing too tightly, and there is enough size in the ear cups and flexibility in the hinges that you can find a comfy spot regardless of head shape.

The audio is one of the areas of the HS60 that has been revised when compared to the earlier model and the efforts of the Corsair engineers has not been in vain. 20Hz-20kHz might be the most common frequency response in the headsets we review but plain specifications never tell the whole story. The 50mm neodymium drivers at the heart of the HS60 Pro Surround combine well with the mesh back to give a listening experience which is airy, rather than constricted. The default sound profile is good with enough tight bass and sound separation to give new life to old favourites. Naturally it doesn’t compare to seriously high end headsets, but it’s amongst the best of the mid-priced models. More on the one mid-priced model it doesn’t quite compare to in a moment. Finally the easy way you can adjust the equaliser in the iCUE software ensures that you can tune it to your own hearing and preferences in an instant.

Whenever it comes to finalising the thoughts about a particular product I always try to initially avoid considering the financial aspect too much. What is one persons affordable is another’s impossible. Spending a tenner on an Indie title is a serious investment for me that requires a month or mores saving, but others buy every AAA game without batting an eyelid. However, the pricing of the Corsair Void Elite range of headsets does put a lot of pressure onto the HS60 Pro Surround and thus it has to be dealt with straight away. The wired Void Elite is £69.99, and it has 20Hz-30kHz drivers and RGB lighting. The HS60 Pro Surround is £64.99 and has 20Hz-20kHz drivers and no lighting. All of which means that the HS60 Pro Surrounds biggest competitor for your money is the next model up in the Corsair range, one that is the price of a pint more expensive but is another step up in audio quality.

The Corsair HS60 Pro Surround ticks an awful lot of boxes for a headset at this price point. It’s light, comfortable and with good audio reproduction. Our experience with similarly designed headsets – the U-shaped hinge design is found on many brands – shows that it will last a long while too. Although there is an all-black option we really like the yellow contrast stitching on the HS60. It’s attractive without being overwhelming. About the only negative is that the Void Elite USB is another step up in luxury for barely any extra outlay, and thus the Corsair HS60 Pro Surround wins our Gamers Choice Award.
